From Full Tanks to Empty Wallets: Christchurch’s Fuel Price Surge

If you’ve filled up your car recently in Christchurch, you probably looked at the cost and may have let out a big sigh. Fuel prices went sky-high over the past few weeks across Christchurch. What used to hover just over $3 per litre climbed up to nearly $4, leaving many roads users wondering if it was going to go higher.

Lower income people began to feel the pressure. These people struggled to keep up with the increasing cost of fuel, due to needing expenses for other essentials. For others such as households, it reached a point where they simply couldn’t afford to fill up as often as they usually did. This financial strain pushed people to rethink their spending and transportation habits and switch to an alternative that is better for the economy.

The sharp surge in cost led to noticeable changes in people’s lives. Lots of people ditched their cars and instead switched to an alternative of biking, walking, or even catching the bus. For some, it was a choice of change: For others it wasn’t optional. It wasn’t just about saving money—it was becoming a necessity.

Panic buying at the pump didn’t help this situation either- some stations struggled to keep up as drivers rushed to fill up before the next price jump. Some experienced many “drive-offs,” where motorists left without paying.
