Bob Power, who passed on the first of March 2026 was a legendary musical engineer whose work not just helped define the sound of neo-soul and hip hop during the 1990s and early 2000s but also demonstrated that musical engineering is not just a technical role, but rather a creative one.

Power worked as a recording and mixing engineer, his most notable work over three decades included A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu’s Baduizm, De La Soul’s De La Soul Is Dead and D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar. While his name may not have been known widely in outside industries. His influence is heard in landmark recordings.

Bob Power contributed to these albums that are now considered a foundation within alternative hip-hop. Power had a clean and balanced style of production. This allowed the space for lyrical and musical detail, which helped to shape sounds that stood apart from mainstream rap at the time.

Bob power bridged genres while maintaining his sonic identity. His work with Erykah Badu helped to develop neo soul as his approach incorporated warmth and clarity. These qualities then became closely associated with the genre's early records.
