If I had to pick one food to eat for the rest of my life, it would be sandwiches. No doubt. There's nothing more satisfying than a hearty sandwich - the perfect ratio of sauce, filling, and a complementary bread. It really is that deep.
I humbly believe that I have incredible taste in sandwiches, so I am here to share my boots-on-the-ground journalism on some truly life-changing sandwiches here in Otautahi.
Chicken, Pesto & Avo Focaccia - Child Sister
Starting strong with this quality sandwich at $14. Inside the fresh focaccia is the obvious: chicken, pesto, and avocado, as well as cheese, and a bit of mayo!
Top Tip: Get it toasted! They add a bit of butter before grilling, making it all golden and crunchy.
Chicken, Bacon Caesar Sammie - Coffee Culture
This humble sammie is an affordable $10.50. With plenty of Coffee Culture branches around Otautahi, it is also generally pretty accessible. Inside the delicious Parmesan bun: chicken, Hellers bacon, lettuce, Swiss cheese, and Caesar sauce, of course.
Top Tip: The Palms branch often has it. If not? Chicken, Pesto, Turkish is your next best move.
Avocado Spiced Potato Sandwich - Central Deli Sandwiches
Next, we have a beautiful veggie option; $15 for this hearty sandwich, one of the pricier ones for sure, but absolutely worth it. Stuffed in the toasted sourdough: avocado, lettuce, spiced potato, and tamarind chutney. Something different and super yummy!
Top Tip: This spot is pretty hidden, keep an eye out for the ‘Story’ signage down New Regent, or you’ll walk straight past it as I did.
Chicken Sandwich - Hokitika Sandwich Company
Here we have our big boy at $14.50 for a half, or $27 for a full if you’re feeling a bit naughty.
Inside this delicious fresh bread is: Smoked chicken, smoked cheddar, aioli, red onion, and greens. Nothing too fancy, but always hits the spot.
Top Tip: Keep an eye out on Uber Eats for $$ off this sammie!
Chicken Satay Bahn Mi - Bánh Mì Em
Some may say I’m cheating here, but this $12.50 Bánh Mì is a must-try. Inside the fresh bread is: Turmeric Chicken, Peanut Satay Sauce, Iceberg Lettuce, Pickled Carrot, and Onion (with Chili and coriander available upon request). Yum! This one is super-filling.
Top Tip: You get $1 off your total if you also get fries and a drink! They also accept Bitcoin payment…?
If you’re also on the hunt for Ōtautahi’s best sandwich, here is a pretty good place to start. Work your way through the list, then pair your fave with some AirPods and The Sauce on 96.1, Rova, or iHeart. Best combo!
